I was totally on the wrong page. You have a Chiefs Special model 36 (Unless it says 'Airweight' on the barrel which I cannot see) 'J' frame. Your serial number of 125447 would show a 'Born' date of early 1958. The serial number 125000 should be the start on model numbers in very late 1957. An Airweight Kit Gun was introduced in November 1954 with pilot production be-ginning at serial number 5000. However, actual mass production and distribution did not begin until January 1958 with se-rial numbers starting at 32,244. This was first known as the Model of 1955, and later officially as the Model 43 22/32 Kit Gun Airweight. May 17, 2008 That serial number series was used for several models. When you open the cylinder, you'll see the model number stamped on the frame just above where the yoke pivots. A model 36 is a Chiefs Special A model 37 is a Chiefs Special Airweight A model 38 is a Bodyguard Airweight And a model 49 is a Bodyguard Jim. This small revolver, designed primarily for plainclothesmen and off-duty police officers, made its public debut at The International Association of Chiefs of Police conference in 1950. At the conference, the Smith & Wesson sales force asked the police chiefs to vote on a name for the new revolver. The most commonly suggested name was .38 Chief’s Special®. Designed with the needs of law enforcement officials in mind, the Chief’s Special proved to be a popular revolver for personal protection due to its size and weight. When Smith & Wesson adopted model numbers in 1957, the Chiefs Special became the Model 36.
